Mastering Love: A Journey Towards Authentic Connection – 19: Practicing Respect 2
Sep 23, 2025
The impact of nurturing seeds of respect and love is timeless and far-reaching, as beautifully illustrated by the message from one of the early beneficiaries of the sexuality education kit I introduced back in 2005. Her journey from a child empowered by these lessons to a mother imparting similar values to her son exemplifies the generational influence of our efforts to instill respect and love. This legacy underscores the profound significance of our contributions to shaping a world grounded in respect and understanding.
Continuing our exploration of the RESPECT acronym, today we delve deeper into the principles that can enhance our expression of love and respect:
S - Save from Danger
The essence of love is often manifested in the act of protection. Shielding our loved ones from harm encompasses a broad spectrum of actions, from the literal—preventing a child from danger—to the metaphorical, such as guarding against emotional or psychological threats. This protection sometimes requires tough decisions that might not appear 'nice' on the surface but are paramount in ensuring the safety and well-being of those we cherish. True love and respect involve being a vigilant guardian, ready to act decisively to avert harm. Love, to a parent whose child is about to jump from a 30th floor, is to forcefully take him off the cliff into safety.
P - Paint People Well
Our perceptions and narratives about others are reflective mirrors of our own internal landscapes. Focusing on and celebrating the strengths and potential of those around us not only nurtures their growth but also contributes to a culture of positivity and empowerment. Dwelling on negatives can be a destructive force in any relationship, magnifying flaws and overshadowing virtues. By choosing to highlight the positive, we create an environment where growth, love, and respect flourish. This approach reminds us that for every negative trait we perceive, there exists a positive counterpart, warranting our attention and appreciation. See and speak of the beauty in others and you will see beauty manifest in you. Whatever we focus on becomes magnified and can be exaggerated. Same way we exaggerate the wrongs in our partner is the same way we can exaggerate their strengths. What do you see and say about others?
