When the Saviour fails to show up!!

As the final whistle brought the World Cup to a close, Spain stood on the mountain while Argentina watched from below.

Spain won the final 1–0 after extra time. Ferran Torres came from the bench to score the decisive goal, but the scoreboard did not fully explain what happened on the field. Spain took the first twenty shots of the match and nine of the opening ten corner kicks. Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, had to make twelve saves simply to keep his nation alive.

Argentina had Lionel Messi arguably the greatest footballer of his generation. Spain had something else; They had collective responsibility. There was no single Spanish messiah everyone waited upon to perform a miracle. There was no one player around whom the entire destiny of the nation revolved; They were their own rescuers.

Every player understood that the trophy would not be delivered by the brilliance of one man but by the responsibility of eleven men, the courage of those on the bench and the intelligence of the system holding them together. And that may be the most important lesson you need this week.

Too many people have built their lives around the expectation of a saviour. Ask the average Nigerian what the country needs, and the answer is often: “We need one strong leader who will reduce prices, end corruption, create jobs and make Nigeria great.”

Then ask the next person about their personal future. He is waiting for a destiny helper - someone who will discover him, finance him and open the door.

We have raised a generation fluent in expectation but weak in responsibility. Argentina had lived for years with the comforting knowledge that, when the night became dark, Lionel Messi might produce light. At critical moments, he had rescued them and created something from nothing.

Today, I want to announce to you that the human messiah around whom you have built your future may be the greatest impediment to your becoming the best version of yourself. Sometimes, the person you are waiting for is preventing you from discovering the person you could become.

This does not mean we do not need help. We all need relationships, mentors, opportunities, capital, favour and collaboration. But help should accelerate responsibility not replace it.

Here are four lessons from Spain’s triumph that you must deploy as you pursue your own World Cup this week.

1. Stop Waiting for One Person to Change Everything - Build what you can with what you already have. A helper should meet you moving, not sleeping beside an unopened suitcase. A destiny built entirely around one person is a fragile destiny. Spain did not need one player to rescue the entire team because responsibility had been distributed across the system. Rodri controlled the midfield; the defenders protected the structure. And when the decisive moment came, a player introduced from the bench delivered the winning strike. Your destiny needs more than one engine.

2. Become the Person You Have Been Praying to Meet - Some people have spent ten years praying for someone with courage, resources, wisdom, influence and discipline to enter their lives. But what would happen if you became that person?

What if you became more courageous & financially intelligent? Spain’s players did not look around the dressing room searching for a saviour. Perhaps the breakthrough you are calling a miracle is waiting for your maturity. Perhaps heaven is not withholding a helper instead heaven is developing you into one.

Taking responsibility does not mean removing God from your journey; It means refusing to use faith as an excuse for passivity. Prayer should produce movement and revelation should produce responsibility. Faith that never enters the field remains a beautiful speech in the dressing room.

3. Collective Responsibility Will Always Outperform Individual Brilliance - Argentina had the brightest individual star but Spain had the stronger collective system. This is one of the great laws of sustainable success: Talent may win a moment, but systems win generations.

If you are raising children, do not solve every problem for them. If you are building a business, do not make yourself the only person capable of making decisions and if you are married, do not allow one spouse to carry the entire emotional, financial or parental burden. The greatest legacy of leadership is not how many people needed you; It is how many people became stronger because you led them.

4. Live at the Frequency of “There Is No Looking Back” - When nobody is coming to rescue you, something shifts inside you. You stop playing casually instead you begin to make what I call super moves. Super moves are the decisions people make when retreat is no longer emotionally available.

It is the spirit Esther expressed when she said:“If I perish, I perish.” Some people never discover their true strength because they have always kept an emergency exit open. They start businesses while secretly planning to quit. They enter relationships while protecting themselves from commitment.

You may not have the complete resources but begin with the resources available. You may fail but do not allow the possibility of failure to turn you into a spectator at your own destiny.

What move would you make this week if you truly believed nobody was coming to rescue you?

There is a dangerous comfort in believing that somebody is coming. It allows you to postpone growth & excuse poor preparation. It allows you to place responsibility for your condition in someone else’s hands and remain a spectator while calling your passivity faith.

But perhaps nobody is coming in the way you imagined, perhaps the door won’t open. Maybe you must learn to build one and create your own table. Because the day you stop waiting for one person to rescue you is the day every dormant part of you receives permission to rise.

This week, take responsibility for your destiny. Not because you do not need God or people but because divine assistance was never designed to excuse human responsibility. My mantra when I was in school was to pray as though everything depends upon God and prepare as though everything depends upon you. Collaborate as though greatness requires a team. And enter the field knowing that your life will no longer be governed by the arrival or absence of one extraordinary person.

Your destiny is too important to be left on anyone’s bench.

Take the field.

Take responsibility.

Make your super move.

And go win your own World Cup.
